It's been a fun few years communing with Potter fans online from around the world, but it is time I left the stage.

According to my calculations, it's past midnight in the UK, so I'm posting my review. If you are reading LJ on release night, shame on you. Still, I'm putting it under a cut so that no one is inadvertently spoiled. If you click on the link, however, the fault is no one but yours.

My wife and I went to see the movie Thursday, dubious about the PG-13 rating, and just as dubious about the big-screen franchise after five iterations. I won't lie to you; I really hate Michael Gambon as Dumbledore and feel that they really botched his character when Richard Harris died. I also hated Hermione's character in the third and fourth films for a multitude of reasons. With all of this baggage, you'd think I wouldn't enjoy the movies, but you'd be wrong.

» My last word on DH before it comes out.
Even if a hacker does manage to break into the Scholastic network and squirrel away a copy of the manuscript, or a forklift driver goes berzerk and carries a whole pallet of books through the streets of Manhattan next week, I'm not going to post anything here about it.
Next week, I'll be in South Carolina, soaking in the sun and surf. The week after that, it'll be time to see how good that Cho/Harry kiss really was on screen. Then, I will walk down an untrodden path with Harry Potter as my eyes and J. K. Rowling as my guide -- for the last time.
The final words on DH before I go are borrowed from Kristina Dell and Laura Fitzpatrick:
"Spoilers are a myth: they don't spoil. No elaborate secrecy campaign is going to make Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows any better than it already is, and no website could possibly make it useless and boring."
See you on the flip side.

» "The Commander Guy"
I have to point out this intensely funny op-ed from the Washington Post. Whether you hate or love President Bush, you have to admit that some of the things the guy says is downright hilarious. I guess his inability to articulate could be a bad thing.
I also love the little jab Mr. Robinson gives about the Iraq war. What, exactly will victory look like there?

Last November, the Washington Post published an article about the huge decrease in French citizens choosing to marry.

» Whoah, Hermione!
The marketing folks at the WB have been busy making Emma-as-Hermione more... noticeable on one of the OOTP posters. TLC posted it, and I put it here for you to see for yourself.
Yikes!
If you look really closely, Bonnie's waist gets a bit tighter as well. As if she needs it!
I can understand a T&A movie getting this treatment, but it's Harry Potter for crying out loud!

» Why homosexuality is bad for society
Don't read this if you are upset by views sympathetic to the traditional family, or that are against homosexuality. Also note that I said "homosexuality", not "homosexuals". I've been flamed too many times by people who can't get that straight. I'm not talking about the people, but the practice, especially as it relates to marriage and society.

I watched the first episode of a four hour peek into the history of the church last night. The second is going to be broadcast tonight and will begin with the 20th century church through today.
( Click to read what I submitted to the Frontline website's request for comments )
I tried to record it, but my recording program didn't like me peeking at the file while it was capturing and only recorded the first few minutes. Did anyone else get a good capture?
I might have to break down and buy the DVDs.

» I was afraid of this...
I deliberately did not comment on the VTech shootings because I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. There's always a major backlash in society when we are struck dumb by the horrors we can produce. It happened with Columbine, and it happened after the OK City bombing.
Now, because people in authority are held liable for society's problems, it's not safe for our kids to write what they feel.

» More impeachment bruhaha
The Vice-President is one step closer to being impeached. Part of the discussion of this development centered around how broken the U.S. election system is. I commented a couple of times on it in the "Unwinnable" thread, but I wanted to expand a little more here.

I read a fascinating LJ entry the other day and it sparked some long dormant writing. This is meant to be the last chapter of "The First Horcrux" so don't read if you don't want to be spoiled on (some of) the ending.

» Choppy political waters ahead
I'm going to post something political about myself, so feel free to read and comment, but whatever you do, do not reply in my own journal with a rant about how wrong you think my views are. I can take a good debate about the ideologies I espouse, but no personal attacks, M'kay?

I took the quiz at the Leaky Cauldron and threw my 'fandom rep' on the line. *eyeroll*

» Woman selling everything on Ebay
I've heard of this kind of thing from time to time, but for some reason, this just struck me funny. She even has a blog about the auction. So far, the bidding is up to $830 with a reserve of $2000, but you have to pick it up in Minnesota. Good luck with that.
Here's a highlight of some of the stuff she's selling:
Chairs, seashells, albums and eight tracks(Someone tell her it's the 21st century!), clothes, appliances, linens, dishes, a 7 year old iMac, futon, books, etc.
She claims it will be refreshing to start over. I look back on when I first got married and could fit all my belongings into a steamer trunk and have to shake my head. The freedom was nice, but I kind of like the security of owning a piece of land and all the trappings of making said land (and accompanying home) look beautiful. Besides, the kids don't like it when you can't give the school a permanent address....

» I'm not dead
Really. I've just been 'hiatusing'. Yeah... that's it.
Since I last updated any of my stories, I moved across country (which necessitated a job change), changed jobs again (but not because I was looking), had the county where I live declared a federal disaster area, and acquired two dogs (I thought kids kept me busy!)
Still, I've managed to write a thing or two in the middle of all of that. It's been so long, however, that things aren't flowing quite right. If you don't write very often, I've discovered, writing becomes very difficult. It took me about three weeks of constant effort to get 500 words down for one story. Of course, I did a load of outlining, too, but I used to be able to bang out 2,500 words in a day.
With the move also came a change in ISP, and therefore, web hosting. My website for partial chapters and stories that aren't posted anywhere is now: http://geocities.com/mrintel173.
Enjoy!
P.S. It seems that while I was posting this some important news flashed across the fandom. Now I have a deadline to finish my stories ;)
